Key West, Florida

Itinerary

One Day in Key West for under $50

Experience Key West in just one day!

Are you looking to make the most of your limited time in Key West? With a short flight from the Sanford International Airport, you can fully immerse yourself in this tropical paradise.

This itinerary is perfect for Central Florida residents or anyone visiting the Keys by flight or car.

Central Florida Travelers:

Travel to Key West made easy with Allegiant Air, which I chose to fly directly from the Sanford International Airport.

Flights can be as cheap as $47 round trip for the day (through Kiwi). It's important to note that they only fly on certain days, so be sure not to miss your flight! But flying in and out was quick and easy since they were both small airports.

The flight had so much positive energy with regular flyers that seemed to do this every weekend. Definitely nothing like any other flight I've been on!

Each flight ended up being around 45 minutes- a perfect flight for a quick getaway!

When is the best time to travel to Key West?

Regardless of your age, the Florida Keys offer a variety of activities that will satisfy your interests. You can go snorkeling, sunbathe on the beach, explore museums to learn about the history of the city, grab a bite to eat at various restaurants, and indulge in some delicious key lime pie.

The best time to visit Key West is from March to May, during the shoulder season of spring. The weather is fantastic, the prices are slightly more reasonable than in the winter months, and there are fewer crowds.

Know Before You Go

Here are some things to consider before heading to the beach:

  • Be aware that there are only a limited number of beaches available. In fact, we only came across one true beach area, opposed to cliffs that lead down to the water.

  • If you're planning to go swimming or snorkeling, check the seaweed levels beforehand. We noticed that many of the waters had a strong smell of sour seaweed and a considerable amount of it in the water.

Getting Around

I can't recommend We Cycle enough! They made the whole day easier by providing drop-off services (for free) by locking the bikes up for us right outside of the airport.

The city itself is incredibly bike-friendly, with an bike trail leading to the city center in just 20 minutes. Best of all, we didn't have to worry about paying any entrance or parking fees, and navigating the city on a bike was a breeze!

Total cost was $14 each for the day

Things to do

Check out the Southernmost Point Buoy!

The Southernmost Point Buoy is located at the intersection of South Street and Whitehead Street.

The line for this can get quite long, so I'd recommend having it be your first destination. Getting a photo here is a must!

Get yourself an island coconut!

Sip on a refreshing coconut from one of the many venders along the street.

It's a great way to support locals and get a taste of the island's culture. Sipping on a coconut while walking along the beach or exploring the town is a perfect way to enjoy your surroundings.

Coconut was $7

Beach it up or snorkel at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic Park! They have easy bike parking, a beach restaurant and bar, and rentable beach equipment.

Although my boyfriend only spotted a crab during his snorkeling adventure, the water was crystal clear and the overall experience was enjoyable.

Bike entry is $2.50

The Key West Lighthouse offers a unique perspective of the city. With only 88 steps to the top, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views.

Student entry is $11.50 if you purchase your tickets online.

Eat key lime pie! The pie's popularity and reputation at Blue Heaven make it a must-try for any visitor to the area.

One slice is $11.

Explore the Historic Seaport town and stroll along the boardwalk to discover charming shops!

This area is famous for its vibrant restaurants and bars where you can enjoy live music.

Parking and entry is free.

Check out Mallory Square. Mallory Square is home to several unique attractions, including the Key West Aquarium, Waterfront Playhouse Theater, Shipwreck Treasures Museum, and Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Museum.
